PROTECTING WORKERS FROM FALLS: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW WHEN WORKING AT HEIGHTS

By: admin

Working at heights does not come without risk. Falls from heights can happen anywhere, anytime. These injuries and fatalities are preventable.

Every year, falls result in a significant number of worker injuries and deaths, particularly in roofing contractors and residential building construction. Common contributing factors to falls are lack of work site instruction, not wearing personal protection equipment (PPE) and lack of falls training.

Using lift equipment properly and understanding the capabilities of the machine you are using is imperative. Be wary of machine tip-overs or other structural failures that could happen. This is a recent issue with the Genie S-65, where the separation of the turntable from the chassis can result in a machine tip-over or other structural failure.

Complying with Occupational Health and Safety Regulations

Under Ontario’s Occupational Health and Safety Act regulation 25(2)(h), employers must take every reasonable precaution to protect workers from hazards. They must provide information and instruction, and ensure that workers properly use the required equipment. Otherwise, employers, supervisors and workers can be prosecuted for not complying with the law.

This regulation carries a max fine of $500k for the company, and $25k and or jail time for the supervisor.

In addition to costly fines, you should also consider the costs of losing an employee to injury or death. According to the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board, the average cost of an injury claim is nearly $12,000. Equipment damage and lost productivity costs should also be considered.

The Ministry of Labour is currently conducting a safety blitz in Ontario’s Construction industry. While inspectors are targeting Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as part of safety push, it’s important you are complying with all safety regulations.
